Going Sober for the New Year?

At the start of every year, there is an unspoken cardinal rule that every person must compile a list of new year’s resolutions.

Particularly in January, where Alcohol Change UK’s Dry January campaign gives people the chance to go alcohol-free for a month with the hope of carrying on in the long run.

When did Dry January start?

Since the initiative started in 2013, it has attracted thousands of supporters and participants. Last year, approximately 130,000 people in the UK took part, showing just how many people are interested in adopting better lifestyles.

Even the Gigabit Network’s team have ventured into trying alcohol-free drinks that we had no idea existed until the last two years. One of our very own Marketing Team – Faith Ratcliff – is tracking her Dry January progress through the Try Dry app as she joins in the campaign.

Non-drinking is a new scene on the rise as healthier and sustainable choices continue to challenge the norm.

Where to find alternative drinking options?

Since we launched into Derby to supply residents with ultra-reliable and ultrafast broadband, we discovered a norm-breaking dry bar along Green Lane called YADA.

The dry bar opened in June last year as the first in the Midlands to be completely alcohol-free. With an online store filled with a variety of tasty non-alcoholic drinks, from kombucha to AF beers, spirits, and wines, participants of Dry January can enjoy their first month of sobriety with ease.

Those who are just alcohol-free curious can also benefit from all the fun, exciting events YADA hosts such as live music night, games night, Queers Without Beers and many more open to the whole community. YADA’s team aim to revamp Derby’s night-time economy and reduce the peer pressures of drinking culture.

As a Midlands-based company as well, here at Gigabit, we love to support local businesses that share the heart of the community.

Our connectivity values run deeper than just our broadband products. While we aim to supply the fastest internet with pure fibre and ensure our customers get the best deal and broadband service, we also aim to spread awareness on innovative and authentic businesses.

YADA is a community-focused company, innovating the drinking scene for those needing alternatives.

If you are taking part in Dry January pop down to YADA or visit their online store here for non-alcoholic beverages. For more information on Dry January, you can head over to the Alcohol Change UK website.

Dry January? Tick!

How about starting the year right with better-suited broadband too? See which package is best for you and check if we are in your area with our postcode checker now.

From Gigabit, we wish you all the best of luck with your 2022 New year’s resolutions!

5 Reasons Why Your Business Needs FTTP Broadband

What is FTTP broadband? FTTP stands for Fibre To The Premises which is where fibre broadband is directed straight to a home instead of a cabinet that services an area. It’s faster, more reliable and a lot more secure.

But why does a business need FTTP? And what daily benefits are available with it?

1. High Performance

Unlike FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet), the main benefit is that FTTP is a direct fibre connection and has the highest speed capacity than standard fibre broadband, because of this, FTTP can reach speeds up to 20x faster than your average broadband. There is nothing that compares.

2. Cost Effective

“Slow internet causes costly delays in your company’s operations and workflow management. It’s been revealed the average employee wastes one week per year waiting for their network to respond”-  Nick Hastreiter.

Now multiply this by 100 employees.

3. Ultra-reliable

If you are living in a busy home with multiple devices or if you’re a business owner you will almost certainly benefit a lot more from FTTP.  Why? Not only is it a lot faster, but there are less chances of your internet cutting out half way through an important email or call to a client.

4. Rapid Installation

While FTTC is the most common and accessible option for many, FTTP is only available to 15% of households, but this is soon to change as the government has a target to get more homes connected.

Your area is not serviced yet? You can show your interest here and we will do the rest.

5. Upgrade at anytime

You are able to upgrade your business at any time, so that you can enjoy ultrafast broadband without the penalties.

Gigabit Networks: Your No.1 Internet Service Provider of the Year for the Midlands 2021

We are delighted to announce that we are the winners of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) of the Year 2021 for the Midlands from EU Business News – for our hard work to bring a range of full fibre products to our customers in the region.

This award allows us to recognise the hard work and dedication from our employees over the last 2 years by encouraging and showing businesses what they can achieve with faster, future-proofed, ultra-reliable internet connectivity.

“We are thrilled to win ISP of the Year for the Midlands. Awards as prestigious as this one go a long way to raise awareness around full fibre digital infrastructure and the opportunities it can bring to the region.” said David Yates, Co-Founder, Gigabit Networks.

The EU Business News is a publication that provides an in depth overview of the world of European Business. Circulating to over 100,000 C-suite executives across the continent monthly, EU Business News judges its winners based on merit – meaning the awardees must demonstrate expertise in their field, dedication to customer service and commitment to excellence and innovation.

“The influence of the pandemic has brought connectivity into the spotlight like never before.” said Dan Ilett, Co-Founder, Gigabit Networks. “It is truly brilliant to win this award at a time where the internet kept the world moving whilst everything else stood still. Seven million low-income households left behind on internet, warns research

More than seven million low-income households are unable to access internet at an affordable price, according to a report published in inews.

The Liberal Democrats blame a lack of government action to drive compulsory low-income or social-housing tariffs by internet providers for millions left behind in the digital divide.

Telco watchdog Ofcom has said the main broadband providers fail to go far enough on promoting social tariffs.

Gigabit Networks has baked social tariffs into its core offerings in a bid to bridge the digital divide in the Midlands – where the UK experiences some of the highest densities of deprivation.

While mainstream providers sell social tariffs at around £15 per month for 15Mb, Gigabit Networks is offering gigabit-capable (up to 930Mb) connections for £30 per month.

“We are doing everything we can to bridge the digital divide in the Midlands,” said David Yates, Cofounder of Gigabit Networks. “A child who can’t learn or play on the internet is a child left behind. We have a duty to provide the best access at an affordable price for people on low incomes.”

“Social housing organisations also need to play their part in connecting low-income households,” said Dan Ilett, Cofounder of Gigabit Networks. “We can bring the connections, the price and the service but without their collaboration millions will be left with poor internet.”

Gigabit Networks is now a proud sponsor of Burton and Derby (BaD) Community Radio

This month Gigabit Networks became a partner of BaD Community Radio – an online radio station committed to being the local voice for its community.

Gigabit Networks aims to collaborate with BaD radio station to dig deeper into the community of Derby.

The platform also provides an opportunity to spread awareness of the next-generation internet connectivity now available in the area. For many listeners, the Gigabit Networks launch means they now have access to 20-times faster broadband – enabling efficient home working and digital savvy users to surf the internet reliably on a day to day basis.

“Smart technology now lies at the heart of almost everything we do. The partnership with BaD radio presents a unique chance to speak directly with the people of Derby to showcase the benefits of ultra-fast and ultra reliable connectivity into their homes.” said David Yates, CEO of Gigabit Networks.

Originally set up as Derby Community Radio, BaD radio represents Derby’s biggest breakfast radio show – broadcasting 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The station is deeply rooted into the community of Derby and helps to showcase major talking points within the City.

“The station was set up to offer the listeners of Derby a choice of local information and entertainment. We want to offer a service that brings listeners and businesses together, and the sponsorship with Gigabit Networks now means we can continue to offer our services as well as grow our network significantly in the future.” said Darren Perrin, Managing Director of BaD radio.

Gigabit Networks works exclusively with CityFibre – the third biggest digital infrastructure provider in the UK – to deliver disruptive technology to the residential market of Derby. Its mission is to bridge the digital divide across the Midlands, starting with Derby and Coventry in Autumn 2021. And because the CityFibre network is new, prices for the world-grade internet speeds are now more affordable.

Moving forwards in a post-pandemic world, Gigabit Networks and BaD radio hope to be collaborating together on outside broadcasts, interviews and business events that are at the heart of the communities in Burton and Derby.

Don’t be a Digital Dinosaur – National Coding Week 2021

In this ever-changing technological time when working at home became the norm, technological skills were not only a luxury, but a necessity. Unfortunately, for many generations coding was not a skill that was taught; it was often only thought of in the realms of sci-fi and hackers, such as in Star Trek or The Matrix.

However, with initiatives such as National Coding Week, this digital hesitancy amongst adults may not be for long – and with this end, incalculable possibilities will open up.

One such possibility is that coding is the new global language which every country uses. It is a skill that isn’t bound to the borders of one country – it is an invaluable skill that makes the user of coding an asset that every global employer is begging for.

With this new language another opportunity arises, which is community – something that COVID has taught us is needed more than ever.

During the COVID era, communities around the world helped each other, and with learning to code, one of the largest communities arose. Adults were able to share knowledge, advice and skills with likeminded individuals which provided solace – but also a chance of betterment with job prospects, as well as mental health.

Thus, with National Coding Week taking place an opportunity begins, where resources open up; with tech companies offering support to adults to benefit and launch themselves into the endless possibilities that coding harbours.

So, with coding not being this secretive world full of hidden meanings and people, adults should open themselves up to the possibility of experiencing a wonderful new language that provides endless hope and freedoms to an entire new world at their fingertips.

Why not get involved in National Coding Week 2021? We have listed some resources below that will kickstart your coding journey:

Are you giga-fit for these incredible upcoming gaming releases?

With new-gen consoles recently released from both PlayStation and Xbox (if you can get your hands on one that is), the digital gaming marketplace is about to get a complete revamp with tons of new, exciting and technologically advanced games coming to our screens in 2021/22.

COVID unfortunately delayed the release of some of the titles we at Gigabit Networks were looking forward to plugging into – but here’s a couple of the games recently announced that we think you should be keeping an eye out for.

FAR CRY 6

The release of Far Cry 6 is long-awaited – and one of the titles which unfortunately had its release date delayed due to staffing issues at Ubisoft during the COVID pandemic.

The story follows the traditional Far Cry blueprint – this time taking place in the Caribbean on the fictional island of Yara ruled by facist dictator Antón Catillo (played by Giancarlo Esposito) and his son & prodigy Diego, who is unsure of his future. Users play as Dani Rojas, a local Yaran guerilla fighter who plans to restore the island to its former glory.

One of the best features of Far Cry is it’s open-world aspect and we’re looking forward to seeing what the team have created for the new map, which promises to be ‘the largest Far Cry map to date’. We’re also super excited to see what Esposito does with the role of ‘El Presidente’ Antón Castillo – who proved his bad-guy status time and time again with his characters Gus in Breaking Bad, and Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian.

And Far Cry have once again outdone themselves with their cute (but deadly) sidekicks available to your character throughout the game – one word, Chorizo! Fight crime with the most adorable (and courageous!) little sidekick we’ve ever seen in the franchise.

You can preorder the game now on the Ubisoft website, officially releasing October 7th to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Epic Games and Ubisoft Connect.

BACK 4 BLOOD

A new, independent spin-off to the infamous Left4Dead franchise – this brand-new zombie shooter from Turtle Rock Studios is sure to be a hit, boasting a campaign available for up to 4 players via online co-op and a brand new PVP mode, similarly to its predecessor.

The Back4Blood website boasts ‘extreme replayability’ in its new story – quoting the following:

“A new rogue-lite Card System creates different experiences with each playthrough. You can jump right into the action by choosing a pre-made deck or dive into Back 4 Blood’s vast customisation and make your own. The choice is yours”

BACK4BLOOD

Play the Back4Blood story solo, or online with up to 3 friends co-op – and then jump into the exciting new 4v4 PVP online mode, where players can take on the role of a ‘Cleaner’ (survivors) or ‘Ridden’ (the infected):

“Switch between playing as a Cleaner or Ridden. As a Cleaner, you bring the fight to enemy Ridden and aim to survive for as long as you can. As the Ridden, employ unique abilities to destroy your opponents as quickly as possible.”

BACK4BLOOD

Fans of the original Left4Dead series will be excited to learn that Back4Blood is coming to Xbox Games Pass members for FREE, to all Games Pass subscription tiers. Back4Blood will also be available to purchase on all major digital game stores on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. Coming 12th October 2021.

A PLAGUE TALE: REQUIEM

A lesser-known – but equally spotlight deserving – title, the release of A Plague Tale: Innocence was a visually beautiful, narrative-driven game of horror, stealth & strategy. Set in France and following the adventures of Amicia and her young brother Hugo, we saw the siblings battle both the peril of the French Inquisition along with swarms of deadly rats responsible for spreading the black plague.

The stories of the duo and their friends that we encountered in ‘Innocence’ have got us very excited to see what Asobo Studio & Focus Home Interactive do with the franchise next.

Not much has been revealed about the plot of ‘Requiem’ so far. All we really know is that the story once again follows Amicia and Hugo, and picks up right from where the story left off in Innocence.

Asobo Studios (developers of ‘Requiem’) have teased audiences with the following quote:

“Embark on an emotional and breathtaking journey in the sequel to the award-winning A Plague Tale: Innocence. Follow Amicia and her brother Hugo, as they do whatever it takes to survive a brutal, uncaring world.”

ASOBO STUDIO

We can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

This game will be released in 2022 (date not yet confirmed) and will also be available to Xbox Games Pass members for free, as well as for purchase on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and in Cloud Version on Nintendo Switch.

And as always – Gigabit Networks have your back and can equip you with next-generation PureFibre digital infrastructure to get stuck into the latest gaming releases.

Don’t be interrupted by peak internet usage hours, unreliable copper cables or your annoying housemates hogging all the bandwidth – and instead get Gigabit-capable, fibre-to-the-home internet with speeds up to 1Gbps (1,000Mbps).

Launching this fall in Derby & Coventry.

What are you waiting for? Check your availability here and get ready for battle ?

And tell us on our socials about some of the games you’re looking forward to being released over the coming months – we’d love to add more to our list!

Gigabit Networks & Internet4Schools Partnership: Schools in the Midlands to get internet access at gigabit speeds

Gigabit Networks – the Midlands champion for ultrafast internet – and Internet4Schools are today announcing a partnership that will drive internet speeds in schools up to gigabit speeds.

For many schools this will represent at least a 10-times increase in current speeds, enabling more apps, digital learning and better-quality remote learning if required in the future. The Midlands-wide initiative combines next-gen internet technology with industry-leading content filtering and safe-guarding services – to bring world-class, fast and safe, connectivity to schools in the Midlands.

“This partnership brings together expertise in digital products and a comprehensive understanding of the future of technology in the education sector.” said Chris Kastel, MD of Internet4Schools. “It is really exciting to announce a partnership with Gigabit Networks – together we will deliver gigabit-capable internet access which will accelerate the learning and development of pupils in an ever-evolving online world.”

The technology enables teachers’ activities such as advanced-lesson planning as well as concepts such as augmented and virtual reality – that rely on ultra-reliable connectivity – that can advance and accelerate children’s online learning and educational development.

Gigabit Networks, based in Leicester, works exclusively with CityFibre to deliver its connectivity. Its mission is to bridge the digital divide in the Midlands. CityFibre is investing over £5Bn across the UK to build a completely new and independent full fibre network with a significant amount of that committed to the Midlands. Because the CityFibre network is new, prices for the world-grade internet speeds are now more affordable.

Pure fibre connectivity from Gigabit Networks – allows for symmetrical download and uploads speeds of up to 1Gbps – more than 20 times faster than the UK average.

“Partnering with Internet4Schools provides a fantastic opportunity to advance the digital transformation in the Midlands education sector.” said David Yates, Co-Founder of Gigabit Networks. “Internet4Schools has a deep understanding of the digital needs and requirements of schools and has a track record of delivering exceptional services to the region. We are delighted to partner with them.”

The need for greater bandwidth when re-locating back to the office

The coronavirus pandemic forced almost the entire country’s workforce to relocate to a makeshift home office.

March 2020 saw a surge in home Internet usage – and with the parents working in the living room and the kids streaming on their devices, the need for fast and reliable Internet access was more critical than ever.

Fast-forward to summer 2021, and we are ready to come out of restrictions once again – for (hopefully) the final time.

Although, with businesses and organisations alike forced to move online quicker than expected, people made new online connections and decision makers pivoted towards different aspects of digital income they didn’t consider before.

Now, business all round has a greater reliance on video calls, downloading large amounts of data and digital marketing for sources of revenue.

And if you’ve been working from home during the pandemic, you’ll know there’s nothing more frustrating than a colleague’s face freezing on the screen or not being able to send off important information before a deadline.

It is fair to say, the sharp rise in bandwidth usage is close to reaching tipping point.

Unlike before, businesses that are serious about being on the frontline of the digital transformation require full fibre gigabit Internet access to operate effectively in the office.

With full fibre, you don’t have the street cabinets and copper lines interfering and slowing your connection down. Gigabit technology allows your business’ communications go straight to the heart of the Internet.

Video calls are effortless, downloading information is instant and creativity can prosper with the security of an ultrafast and ultra-reliable Internet connection.

The government pledged 85% of UK premises would have full fibre gigabit Internet access by 2025 – so the upgrade to bridge the digital divide is a matter of when and not if.

Get ahead of the game today and enquire about your businesses office accessing full fibre gigabit Internet access.
