Digital Midlands: Connecting entrepreneurs, investors and talent

The month of April saw the launch of a brand new online publication – Digital Midlands.

The platform aims to bring together a community of entrepreneurs, investors and talent in the world of technology and innovation.

“We see so much potential in the Midlands for great collaboration and investment,” said Dan Ilett, Partner at 4 Oceans Ventures.

“We are focusing our portfolio on the Midlands, as we realised there isn’t really a publication or community to bring together the brilliant stories of tech creativity.”

Digital Midlands was founded due to the rich talent that can be found in the region and the potential for new business & innovation opportunities – yet the area often gets overlooked by investors.

Therefore, Digital Midlands will act as a voice to connect those stories and develop opportunities alongside the wealth of graduate talent, universities and start up businesses in the Midlands.

Gigabit Networks is proud to be a partner of Digital Midlands by sponsoring a series of webinars and events with digital thought leaders in the region.

Moving forward, the online community – an initiative led by 4 Oceans Ventures – aims to be the home for creativity, growth and resources for all things digital in the Midlands ecosystem.

Visit their website now to read the latest news in tech, innovation and investment – and sign up to their newsletter to stay in-the-know, and become a part of the Digital Midlands community.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Nearly two thirds of people in the UK have experienced a problem with their mental health.

However, less than half of these people have ever been treated.

Unfortunately, there is often a stigma attached to mental health due to misconceptions and a lack of reliable information.

And when mental health problems go untreated, it can impact all areas of life.

So this year’s theme of Mental Health Awareness Week is based around nature; how connecting with it, exploring it and embracing it can improve your mental health and act as a form of self-treatment.

Spending time in green spaces can drastically boost one’s mood, relieve stress and improve confidence and self esteem.

And spending time outdoors doesn’t necessarily mean exercise; there are plenty of other activities to do such as connecting with animals, bringing plants or flowers inside the home or growing and picking food.

Building it into your routine to go outdoors and explore new areas is a great way to add some variety into your day.

A change of scenery, breathe of fresh air or looking out for some wildlife always helps to enhance creativity, lift your mood and generally make you feel better about things.

At Gigabit Networks, looking out for our community of clients, customers and employees is critical to our success.

Almost everyone has reported experiencing a mental health problem in his or her lifetime.

Therefore, collaborating together, supporting one another and sharing different ways to cope with mental health problems (e.g. connecting with nature) are more important than ever before. Therefore, collaborating together, supporting one anotherand sharing different ways to cope with mental healthproblems (e.g. connecting with nature) are moreimportant than ever before.

Cancel the Curse of Copper Connections: What is a good upload speed?

Why is my upload speed so slow?!

Have you ever noticed that your uploads seem to take light years to complete compared to your downloads – slowing down the efficiency of you or your colleagues?

When debating over which ISP to go with, some consumers don’t check for upload speed or aren’t aware of the difference when considering which contract to enter.

You may be tempted to go straight to one of the ‘big guys’ with their guaranteed download speeds – but many providers don’t list specific upload speeds in their large print, misleading businesses who need more bandwidth than they can offer.

It’s also common to see broadband providers supply details of upload speeds over 90% slower than their subsequent download speed.

Why doesn’t my ISP care about my upload speeds?

Chances are, they probably do.

But the issue isn’t with your provider hogging your upload bandwidth – it comes down to the limited capabilities and lack of availability of bandwidth with standard internet infrastructure.

Common, copper broadband that is present in the majority of U.K homes and businesses doesn’t have the capability to handle high upload speeds. They were built over two decades ago with a completely different purpose.

In the 90’s, it was assumed the internet would be used for the consumption of content as opposed to the supply of content. This means that our upload speeds will always pale in comparison to downloads on a standard, copper broadband connection in the UK.

This isn’t so bad for consumers at home who need that Warzone download quickly or want to stream the Drag Race finale – but detrimental to some businesses who rely on their upload speed for their employees to do their job properly.

Slow internet speeds alone cause brands to lose 38 hours a year in productivity, per employee – potentially costing days more for those employees constantly uploading large documents, images or videos.

What is a good upload speed?

A ‘good’ upload speed is all dependent on what you use it for and how much you rely on uploading large files and media to complete everyday tasks. The amount of bandwidth required for uploads will change depending on what you’re using it for.

There are hundreds of job roles in the U.K. which place the same amount of importance on upload speed, as download speed – possibly more.

Take the job of a radiographer for example. Their job wouldn’t be possible without the ability to quickly upload super high-quality images taken from their multiple radiographic examinations throughout the day and night – regardless of number of users, or peak usage hours.

A hospital’s internet speed and bandwidth must be capable of juggling connections and usage from thousands of devices, all downloading & uploading large files at the same time.

For creative employees such as video editors, streamers or graphic designers – it’s crucial to have the ability to provide your audience with relevant content when it matters, without the stress of a delay to upload or in streaming. Two-way communications are just as – if not more – important than simply downloads.

Hitting your audience with relevant, up-to-date content proves difficult when a simple 15 minute, 1080p video takes around 50 minutes to upload on a standard UK broadband speed (7mbps, UK 2020; calculator).

How can Gigabit internet help us ‘cancel the curse of copper connections’?

Don’t get tangled up in outdated copper wiring and opt for a PureFibre, Gigabit-capable connection instead.

PureFibre on the CityFibre network gives businesses minimum, GUARANTEED internet speeds both ways – for both uploads and downloads.

Modern connections are been developed, built and installed with the future of the internet in mind.

Using Gigabit Networks’ Ethernet Flex product, for example – uploading the same 15 minute, 1080p video above would take just 1 minute and 47 seconds (calculator) – so you can get your content where it needs to be, when you need it the most with no delay.

Factors you might not have even thought of, such as weather and maintenance, can also cause standard, copper connections to drop – detrimental to businesses who rely on their internet for operations.

Our 99.99% SLA and 6 Hour Guaranteed fix guarantees maximum uptime – meaning you don’t have to worry if the worst happens and your internet goes down. We won’t leave you in the dark – unlike some other ISP’s, who declare in their fine print that you could be left up to 5 business days before your connection is repaired and back online.

Our advice? Always check the fine print, and assess all of your employee and business needs when deciding on your internet provider. Assumptions based on product descriptions could leave you with an upload speed over 10 times slower than your downloads, or a 5 business day wait to fix your connection. Don’t be fooled by big name brands or confusing ISP jargon.

International Nurses Day 2021

The previous year has been like no other in the healthcare sector.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the incredible dedication, hard work and sacrifice of our nurses into the spotlight like never before.

Along with it, fellow clinicians, essential key workers and vital resources were all pushed to the maximum.

On the 201st anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth – the pioneer of good practice in modern nursing – we commemorate the profound good of healthcare staff and reflect on their amazing impact on our lives and those of our loved ones.

There is no doubt the coronavirus pandemic has brought new and unforeseen challenges to the health service with ever-changing processes and rising expectations.

And so the reach and scope of nursing practices during the pandemic to make such a meaningful and irreplaceable difference is both extremely remarkable and humbling.

From the team at Gigabit Networks, we are eternally grateful for the crucial role nurses play within our lives every single day.

Although it is difficult to imagine working through such a distressing, life-changing pandemic, we understand the resounding need to work together to support the frontline overcoming these challenges to treating patient health.

Gigabit Networks is trying to play our part with discounted offers for NHS facilities and care homes throughout the Midlands during the pandemic.

Gigabit Networks is proud to have installed gigabit Internet access in a major Midlands NHS trust.

So that patients can get their treatments faster, nurses can communicate reliably and important information is accessed instantly.

The global pandemic will be remembered for many things, but the way nurses, care workers and healthcare professionals have battled through is truly inspirational.

Looking into the future, we are always looking for ways to support our tremendous NHS through game-changing Internet connectivity.

Does big brand trust blind your judgement of internet service jargon?

Don’t be blinded by big brands – assess brand trust vs jargon

Things go wrong sometimes.

Some ISPs do not understand the urgency for businesses to have reliable internet access with a quick fix. In the UK, 99% of businesses claim that a reliable internet connection is important.

An example of a real broadband product on the market that seems like great value for money, promises reliable customer service and a short 48 hour fix time.

After digging deeper into their terms and conditions however, it can be noted that these 48 hours are business hours. This means the actual length of time a business could be left without an internet connection is as long as 6 days.

If this period happens to fall on a Friday, your business could be waiting for over a week to get back online.

For businesses that rely on their internet connection, this is simply not viable.

48 hours working hours vs the proper stopwatch

That’s where we differ.

With all of Gigabit Networks’ products you can rest easy knowing we provide rapid, same day fixes if your internet goes down.

As part of our services, we provide a 99.9% up-time guarantee, with a 6 hour guaranteed fix 24/7

When you’re switched on, so are we, no matter what day of the week. We are dedicated to keeping your business up and running with turbocharged speeds, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

2021 – The year of digital

Now more than ever, the importance of access to online services has become paramount in the world of business. Covid-19, the widespread availability of affordable technology and the downfall of the UK high street have massively boosted online activity.

Some internet service providers (ISPs) in the UK have seen a double-digit increase in broadband usage this year compared to “normal” workdays.

There are tens of thousands of businesses in the UK that need a reliable internet connection to operate to their full potential.

To make sure you’re always connected at guaranteed speeds, check your availability for our game-changing Ethernet Flex here.

ISPs – you get what you pay for

ISPs

When it comes to internet service providers, you get what you pay for.

It is estimated that over 10m people in the UK are paying too much for their internet service, partly by not switching providers at the end of their contract not knowing what options are actually available on the market.

These internet connections are also often slow and powered by outdated copper wiring, despite ISPs promising pure-fibre speeds.

Some of the major ISPs on the market offer similar business products to Gigabit Networks’ game-changing ethernet GigaFlex, at prices ranging from £279 to over £400 a month.

This is up to £150 extra per month, with hidden T’s & C’s and complex jargon to add to the confusion of “which service is best for my business?”.

Mental Health Matters: 124% increase in searches for online therapy

Keeping happy is hard, especially in light of the current pandemic.

With a mental health crisis already taking hold of the UK, keeping connected is essential to continue caring for those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.

The internet has provided critical treatment to so many throughout the COVID crisis, with counselling and therapy moving online to become virtual.

This step has helped many receive the right care to help them on their way to a brighter future.

With service speed being the top priority for many health care centres, PureFibre is essential for every health care setting, providing mental health assistance. This means that quick, qualitative and quantitative internet services provide the immediate care and assistance needed during this time.

Prepare now, not later

While mental health care has improved substantially in recent years, the number of people suffering from conditions has only increased exponentially.

Recent studies by the UK-based institutions Mental Health Foundation (1, 2) and Young Minds (3) indicate that the current pandemic has caused an increase in feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts across all age groups.

Gigabit Networks Helps Strengthen 21st Century Comms with Acquisition of Skyline Wireless

Gigabit Networks is delighted to announce the acquisition of Suffolk-based telecoms and VOIP provider Skyline Wireless, together providing greater connectivity and internet in areas of the UK that have struggled for bandwidth.

“We’re delighted Skyline is joining the Gigabit family. The pandemic has created massive demand for faster and better-quality connectivity. We can now not only make central city businesses faster, but more rural areas too.”

Dan Ilett, CEO of Gigabit Networks

Skyline is a specialist provider of ‘last mile’ wireless internet connectivity via radio and 4/5G networks, as well as cloud-based services and security products to SME businesses.

Services provided by Skyline include Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) – part of a global industry trend towards cloud services, also known as digital transformation – and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) – a technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular phone line.

“The Midlands is one of the most exciting places in the UK to do business right now as the connectivity potential is huge. Most people in the Midlands haven’t realised the potential speeds and technology that are now available to them. Together Gigabit and Skyline will change that.”

David Yates, CEO of 4 Oceans Venture Capital and key investor in Gigabit Networks

Internet usage has increased by 47% as more businesses move operations online in 2020, skyrocketing the need for the most up-to-date and reliable digital infrastructure across the UK.

Gigabit Networks and Skyline Wireless are collaboratively making it easier for businesses anywhere to access modern, ultrafast and affordable internet.

Don’t sleep walk into a speed limit – check “up-to” vs “guaranteed”

It’s easy to sign away your internet speed rights. Research shows that 91% of the broadband market is supplied and represented by the 5 largest ISPs by market share

But when you check the fine print of some of the big brand internet products, you’d be shocked what people sign up to.

Consumers spend as little as 11 minutes a day making purchase decisions, which is unlikely to be enough time to decipher the jargon.

Speeds of “up-to”

Take the difference between “up-to” and “guaranteed” internet speeds – “up-to” is used to describe the maximum speed of an internet service, so it’s likely you won’t be hitting that for a portion of your connection.

One example of a real broadband product that does this offers businesses download speeds of “up to 350mbps”. But when you look at the fine print, it shows the minimum download and upload you will receive is actually half of the advertised speeds – 175mbps download and 7mbps upload.

Sneaky. And perhaps one of the reasons the UK comes 47th in the ranking of broadband speeds worldwide.

Guaranteed speeds

Gigabit Networks differs in this respect by instead offering you a minimum speed for ethernet products which is guaranteed at all times, even during peak internet usage hours.

For example, our most popular product “Ethernet Flex” guarantees your business a minimum speed of 200mbps both ways (upload and download). With this product you also get the option to boost your speed when you need it the most for no extra cost, to 1Gbps.

That is the Gigabit Networks pure-fibre difference.

When choosing an ISP, you get what you pay for and we recommend you carefully read the terms and conditions and fully understand what you’re receiving of your internet product before you purchase.

Care Homes Offered Ultra-fast Internet Free for 12-months

Gigabit Networks is offering free, ultra-fast internet to care homes in the UK for up to a year – hoping to enrich the lives of residents so badly affected by COVID-19.

We recognise that digital technology is invaluable in helping elderly and vulnerable people stay in touch with family and friends, as well as helping with everyday tasks such as shopping, ordering prescriptions and banking, and this is heightened during the pandemic.

Working with CityFibre, the UK’s largest alternative provider of wholesale fibre network infrastructure, Gigabit Networks aims to help care home residents by providing far superior internet speeds.

Standard broadband relies on ageing copper connections, which can often be slow. Pure fibre from Gigabit Networks overcomes these limitations to deliver a considerably improved service.

Dan Ilett, CEO of Gigabit Networks, said: “Internet use among older age groups has increased substantially over the last five years – from 52% in 2011 to 83% in 2019, and the current situation is likely to speed that up even more.

“So many elderly people have been separated from their loved ones during the pandemic, as care homes have been hit very hard by the pandemic. If we can help a few more people to see each other and talk more often, albeit virtually, we believe that will only be beneficial to their overall wellbeing.

He added: “In a care home, we hope that fast and efficient internet can re-spark interests and fuel a happier life by connecting residents – without limits – to all their favourite people, hobbies and interests. We are proud to be able to support care homes in this way.”

CityFibre responded to a request fromNHSX, a government unit with responsibility for setting national policy and developing best practice for NHS technology, digital and data, to support care homes by working with its City Champions including Gigabit Networks to offer a new 1Gbps connection offer to keep care home residents and staff connected.

The scheme offers our ‘Ethernet Flex Care’ package to care homes including free installation and no monthly subscription charges for six to 12 months, depending on the contract option chosen.

The availability of gigabit internet in care homes will not only benefit residents but staff too. 1Gbps internet speeds in the workplace removes limits to communication and will improve productivity.

Companies like CityFibre are transforming Britain’s digital landscape, investing nearly £4Bn to build dense pure fibre networks in more than 60 Cities across the UK.

This offer is available to care homes when signing up to one of our “Ethernet Flex Care” plans before 30th November 2020.
